The dairy industry is one of Australia’s three most important rural industries with a farm gate value of $4.6 billion in 2007/2008. Dairy ranks fifth in agricultural exports – valued at $2.9billion. The industry is a major employer; it is estimated that approximately 40,000 people are directly employed on dairy farms and in manufacturing plants, related transport and distributionactivities, and on research and development projects.
